The refuge is dedicated to the memory of Colonel Umberto Mautino, General Director of the Skiing Courses for the Alpine troops.

Built in 1920 by the mountaineer Giacomo Dumontel, it was expanded in 1929 but was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War.In the immediate post-war period, it was temporarily adapted with a series of provisional works, until it was rebuilt in its current form during 1947 and 1948. The inauguration took place on December 5, 1948, on a beautiful sunny day with autumn-like weather.

The true driving force behind the reconstruction was member Domenico Mazzocchi, while the president, Giuseppe Giraudo, was the main financial supporter. He provided a grant of one million lire and subscribed to half of the 140 shares worth 25,000 lire each, against a total estimated cost of 4.5 million lire.

Since that day, the new Capanna Mautino has become a popular hub for the social activities of the Ski Club Torino.

This tradition has remained alive to this day, carried forward with enthusiasm by the new management starting in winter season 2024/2025.
