Capanna Mautino is a historic high-mountain refuge located at 2110 m
near Cima Fournier and Lago Nero,
a Site of Community Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
The surrounding area, known as the “Monti della Luna” (Mountains of the Moon), is the perfect setting for breathtaking excursions in both summer and winter, whether on foot, by bike, with snowshoes, or on skis.
The refuge is close to the “Vialattea” ski area. Depending on the season, it can be reached on foot, by bike, with snowshoes, or with alpine touring skis, starting from
Bousson, Claviere, and Cervières.

The refuge has been a historic base for Turin skiing since the early days of the sport.
Nestled in the pristine nature of the Monti della Luna, this gem of the Cottian Alps offers an authentic and sustainable mountain experience, with special attention to preserving the surrounding environment.
During the winter, the refuge can be reached with ski mountaineering or snowshoes from Bousson along the summer trail, or via the Sagna Longa ski lifts, immersing you in snowy landscapes and the tranquility of the winter mountains.
In summer, we invite nature lovers to arrive on foot or by bike,
following the forestry trail that leads to the refuge.
Climbers will love the equipped cliffs of Lago Nero and Rocca Remolon.

History
of the Refuge
The refuge is named after Colonel Umberto Mautino, one of the first ski instructors of the Alpine corps. Originally built in 1920 by mountaineer Giacomo Dumontel for the Turin Ski Club and expanded in 1929, it was almost destroyed during World War II. Between 1947 and 1948, it was rebuilt thanks to Domenico Mazzocchi and the financial support of the club’s president, Giuseppe Giraudo. Since its inauguration on December 5, 1948, Capanna Mautino has kept its tradition alive, which, since 2024,
is carried forward with enthusiasm by the new management.
